Speaking Problems and The Solution

More than 3 million Americans have the speech problems know as stuttering. It is one of several conditions that can affect a persons’ ability to speak clearly. Some the problems in speaking are: stuttering, cluttering, articulation disorder, and apraxia (dyspraxia).

Stuttering; Stuttering is a problem that interferes with fluent speech. A person who stutters may repeat the first part of a word (as in a-a-a-aple) or hold a single sound for a long time (as in breeeeeead). Some people who stutter have trouble getting sounds out altogether. Stuttering is complex and it can affect speech in many different ways. A person who stutters has trouble getting out what they want to say.

Cluttering; Cluttering is another problem that makes a persons’ speech difficult to understand. Like stuttering, cluttering affects the fluency, or flow, of a persons’ speech. However, the difference is that cluttering is a language disorder, while stuttering is a speech disorder. A person who clutters says what they are thinking, but it becomes disorganized while actually speaking. Because of this disorganization, someone who clutters may speak in bursts or pause in unexpected places. The rhythm of cluttered speech may sound jerky, rather than smooth, and the speaker is often unaware of the problem.

Articulation Disorder; Articulation disorder is encompasses a wide range of errors people can make when talking. Substituting a “w” for an “r” (“wabbit” for rabbit), omitting sounds (“cool” for “schooll”), or adding sounds to words (“pinanio” for “piano”) are examples of articulation errors. Lisping is refers to specific substitution involving the letter”s” and “z”. A person who lips replaces those sounds with “th”.

Apraxia (dyspraxia); Apraxia (dyspraxia) is also known as oral-motor speech disorder, is a problem with motor coordination or motor planning. A person with this speech problem has difficulty moving the muscles and structures necessary to form speech sounds into words.

The Solution of Speaking Problems
Ur (1987) states that there are some steps to help the teacher to solve the speaking problems. There is concluding of: use the easy language, make the topic interest, get some instruction in the discussion skill, and keep the students’ speaking in the target language. Use the easy language it means that in general, the level of language needed for discussion should be lower and use on easy language; it should be easily recall and produce it by the participant so they can speak fluently. Make the Topic Interest it means that the teacher should make the topic interest to the students, so they can motivate to follow the lesson. Get some Instruction in the Discussion Skill, if the task is based in group discussion, tell the learners to make sure that everyone in group contributes the discussion appoint a chair person to each group who will regulate participation. Keep the Students’ Speaking in the Target Language it means that the teacher might appoint one of the groups as monitor. It can remind the students to use the target language. If the teacher uses this step to solve the problem in speaking, the teachers hoped the students’ ability in practice speaking is better.

Those are the explanation about problems in speaking and the solution. If we want to master the English well especially in speaking we must follow the rule in speaking. To know the rule of speaking understand it more.
